Keri’s Writing Life
I’ve always loved books, reading, and writing. In fifth grade, my teacher told me I was a writer, and I believed him. That year, I read 100 books, which I kept track of on extremely cool purple notebook paper.
In college, a writing teacher invited me to write and edit for the student newspaper, and I discovered my love for journalism. I served as the co-editor of the student newspaper at Wheaton, and a reporter for the Daily Pennsylvanian at University of Pennsylvania.
My first decade after college I worked full-time as a newspaper reporter. I shifted to freelancing around the time I started having kids, writing for websites, magazines, newsletters and so on. I wrote or edited for whoever would pay me, whether it was Roads & Bridges magazine or an astrophotography website.
I wrote my first book when my children were one and three. Since then, I’ve been traditionally published more than a dozen times.
As self-publishing became increasingly popular, I went to school on how to do it. I learned all about various self-publishing platforms, and in 2016, began helping business and ministry leaders to self-publish books and curriculum. Since then, I’ve helped writers self-publish more than a dozen titles. I’ve ghostwritten more than 70 small group study guides for churches, and partnered with pastors including Rick Warren and Bill Hybels.
While I am always working on my own writing, I spend much of my time coaching writers—offering them guidance and accountability. I also offer editing and customized assisted self-publishing.
I publish two Substack newsletters each week. One is on hospitality and travel, the other is the Powerful Story newsletter, which offers free advice on writing and publishing. (subscribe here)
