A first-time author, Janet had written a historical biblical novel about the life of Gamaliel, a revered member of the Sanhedrin, and how his life intersects with the life of Jesus. She wanted guidance on taking it from manuscript to published book.
Janet had a draft of the book, which I edited. She had a vision for the cover, wanting to include part of an 1855 painting, “The Finding of the Savior in the Temple,” by William Holman Hunt. Our designer came up with a stunning cover and beautiful interior page layout that she loved.
Janet worried about her lack of experience with technology. I coached her not to say “I’m not technical,” but rather “I am learning how to use technology.” Sometimes, the first step on our journey is to change our self-talk. Part of coaching writers is not just teaching them the fundamentals of grammar and good writing, but encouraging them to be bold and curious.
“The greatest thing about working with you is your grace, patience, and being real,” Janet emailed. “When I told you I wasn’t techie, you said you didn’t want to hear that when we were working together. I felt a real depth of grace in you. I’m realizing more and more how God has made people interdependent, to need each other and the unique gifts he has given each of us. I also love that you love Gamaliel, that’s a blessing. I’m so glad God brought us together.”
I then guided Janet through the steps of procuring an ISBN, and self-publishing both the paperback and ebook editions using Kindle Direct Publishing. The title is now available on amazon.com
