Keri’s Writing Life

I’ve always loved books, reading, and writing. In fifth grade, my teacher told me I was a writer, and I believed him. That year, I read 100 books, which I kept track of on extremely cool purple notebook paper.

In college, a writing teacher invited me to write and edit for the student newspaper, and I discovered my love for journalism. I served as the co-editor of the student newspaper at Wheaton, and a reporter for the Daily Pennsylvanian at University of Pennsylvania.

My first decade after college I worked full-time as a newspaper reporter. I shifted to freelancing around the time I started having kids, writing for websites, magazines, newsletters and so on. I wrote or edited for whoever would pay me, whether it was Roads & Bridges magazine or an astrophotography website.

I wrote my first book when my children were one and three. Since then, I’ve been traditionally published more than a dozen times.

As self-publishing became increasingly popular, I went to school on how to do it. I learned all about various self-publishing platforms, and in 2016, began helping business and ministry leaders to self-publish books and curriculum. Since then, I’ve helped writers self-publish more than a dozen titles. I’ve ghostwritten more than 70 small group study guides for churches, and partnered with pastors including Rick Warren and Bill Hybels.

While I am always working on my own writing, I spend much of my time coaching writers—offering them guidance and accountability. I also offer editing and customized assisted self-publishing.

I publish two Substack newsletters each week. One is on hospitality and travel, the other is the Powerful Story newsletter, which offers free advice on writing and publishing. (subscribe here)

“I have known Keri for over 20 years and recently had the privilege of working with her to write three small group study guides, as well as a book proposal that led to offers from two major Christian publishers. She is a gifted writer who works fast and has very thick skin – a rare combination. And she is very smart, creative and soulish, which allows her to add tremendous value to a project.”

Honestly, the first thing I would suggest for those who want to self-publish is to contact you. You are the reason I was able to successfully publish. You helped me gain understanding. Your expert editing highlighted issues that needed to be changed. I believe having a striking book cover has helped with the sales.”

“Keri introduced me to the stages of editing: line editing, structural changes, and how to form focus in each chapter. She helped me create a uniformed flow in each chapter. Early on she had a vision for the book and helped me to see it and coordinate the rewriting to support that vision. We worked together to create a structure that would help develop the book’s message.”
“Keri has been wonderful to work with as she guided me through the self-publishing process. Her expertise, patience, reliability, encouragement, and responsiveness made my first novel come to life. It has been a pleasure to work with her.”
